FOR FANS OF
QUIET HOUSES, THE STAVES AND KATIE GREGSON-MCLEOD

Alannah Moar is a songwriter, producer and vocalist, currently based in the east-end of Glasgow. Citing such influences as Fleetwood Mac, Dodie, Taylor Swift and Gabrielle Aplin, Alannah self-describes as a ‘dramatic folk-pop’ artist; lush vocal harmonies, sparkling guitars and ethereal synths layer up to build her distinctive wall-of-sound. For fans of Katie Gregson-Macleod, Quiet Houses and The Staves, Alannah’s previous singles have been heard spinning on BBC Introducing, BBC Scotland, Camglen Radio, Chief Radio and many more besides. Performing alongside notable artists such as KT Tunstall, Callum Beattie, Amanda Palmer and The Eves, she has twice been selected as Resonate’s artist of the week and her last single Hoy was shortlisted for Single of the Year at the 2022 Weekender Awards.

Her upcoming single, About the Boy, is her first single of 2023 and her 5th release overall. Arriving on all major streaming platforms from the 26th of January, About the Boy will be the first of many tracks Alannah is planning to release this year – all of them written, recorded and produced by herself. “I’ve grown up a lot and you can hear it,” says Alannah, “everything I’m writing recently is more introspective and personal to me… you can hear I’m still figuring my s**t out.” Since the pandemic started, Alannah has been grappling with mental-health related issues. Anxiety, low-mood, intrusive thinking and disassociation compounded with her autism diagnosis to make the past few years very difficult for her to write, record and release music. Her latest offerings explore much of what she was experiencing as she began to find her voice again; utilising her song-writing as a therapeutic tool. “A lot of what came out of these songs is very positive…I started writing or rehashing them with this doubt or fear or feeling in mind, then I explored that for a bit and I used the writing to pacify myself.”

With contributions from Matthew Alexander, Carron Miller (Berta Kennedy, Ur.Frnd, Sunspots), Robbie Nicol (Berta Kennedy, Sunspots) and mastering by Robin Sutherland (Deacon Blue, Pictish Trail, Frank Turner), About the Boy is Alannah’s most mature release to date. Scrapping the traditional song-structure, About the Boy is reminiscent of how one might ruminate and remains hopeful in tone, despite the heavy subject matter. “My relationships were the only thing that made sense to me,” Alannah says, “About the Boy is a song about the worst of myself, but it’s also about overcoming that and learning to accept love and tenderness when it is needed most.”
